RTA UAE Learning Permit and Renewal

A Driving License can be obtained from the RTA in the UAE after fulfilling certain requirements. The age restrictions depending on the vehicle type that you are planning to drive. Generally, you must be 18 years of age to get a driving license. There are some facilities where you can learn from the age of 17 years old and 6 months. You should be 20 years of age if you are hoping to get a license for heavy vehicles. These heavy vehicles can be trucks, buses, tractors and other vehicles. 

A driving license which is approved and issued from different countries can be used in the UAE and similarly a driving license issued in UAE can be used in other approved countries. Driving license holders from 32 approved countries can use their licenses in the UAE.

How to get a Learning permit?

The first step to getting a driving license is to get enrolled in a registered driving school. Here in the driving school, you will be provided with driving training lessons. These training lessons are important to get the learning permit. The driving license lessons are related to traffic signs, traffic rules, road signs, driving methods and other lessons. The applicant must take all measures to understand the lessons from traffic education. Traffic education is required to attain the test conducted by the authorities. 

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of UAE will conduct an RTA theory test to get a driving license. A driving license will give you permission to drive vehicles and you can get a driving license only after you get a learning permit. You should pass the driving theory test. This test will consist of driving test questions. The main intent of this test is to check the knowledge of applicants on road signs, traffic rules and others. 

It is suggested that you learn the basics of driving and prepare for the exam. The questions will be asked about road signs, traffic rules and regulations. There are 35 questions and you should score a minimum of 65 percent to qualify the test. These 35 questions are multiple-choice questions where you have to answer the right option. What documents are required?

The following are the documents required.

• Passport & resident visa page
• Emirates id
• Eye test report
• No objection letter from sponsor (if any)
• Other documents as required by the authorities

You should open a traffic file with a registered driving center in the emirates from where you want to get the license. To get ready for the test-driving schools may take more lessons so that you are ready to go for the test. The number of lessons that you take will depend on the emirates. 

Usually, the learner should register for 20 hours of lessons in Dubai. Ten lessons for two hours. If a full license is issued from GCC or Golden visa holders then they can skip this test. If they fail to clear the final test then they have to take this test. 

After you clear the test you will be issued a learning permit. The RTA authorities also provide a provision where if you are unable to clear the final driving test and if the license expires then you can renew the learning permit. 

Apply for Renewing a Learning Permit

You can apply through the driving institute for renewal of your learning permit. Individual customers, citizens and residents are eligible to apply for this service. 

• A service fee of 100 AED is required to be paid for the renewal of the learning permit. These vehicles include motorcycles, light vehicles, auto vehicles and others. 
• A service fee of AED 200 is levied on the heavy bus, heavy equipment, light bus and other vehicles
• A fee of AED 20 is levied as an innovation and knowledge fee
• The processing time will take 5 to 10 minutes at the driving institute for the renewal of the learning permit

Issue of renewed learner permit

The learning license holder should submit the documents and settle the fee payment. The applicant will receive the electronic receipts and permits to the registered email id. An SMS will also be sent to the registered phone number. A link will be provided to download the driving permit along with the receipt. 

The renewed driving license permit validity is 3 months from the date of issue.

According to the federal traffic law, If the road test is not taken within 6 months from the date of issue then the driver should submit all documents again and apply for the learning permit.
